Split payments for licensed building designers in Tasmania

Tasmania licenses building designers through CBOS in three sub-classes and has moved to a single state planning scheme with local schedules. Small Hobart practices that share jobs with engineers can use one staged schedule to keep each licence holder’s work and pay distinct.

Building designer licences

Consumer, Building and Occupational Services (CBOS) licenses building designers under the Occupational Licensing Act 2005, with three sub-classes: Restricted, Limited and Domestic. Each sub-class has its own scope of work, set out on the CBOS licence page.

Security of payment in Tasmania

Tasmania’s scheme is the Building and Construction Industry Security of Payment Act 2009. Disputed claims go to adjudication, with applications made through an authorised nominating authority.

The Tasmanian Planning Scheme

Planning runs under the Land Use Planning and Approvals Act 1993. The Tasmanian Planning Scheme is made up of the statewide State Planning Provisions and a Local Provisions Schedule for each municipality. Hobart and its neighbouring councils share the statewide rules but apply their own local zoning maps and codes.
