FAQ

Questions about split payments, GST and the pilot

Answers describe how things are planned to work. They are general information only.

The product

Is this available now?

No. This is a pre-launch preview. Everything described on this site is planned or in development, and we are recruiting a small group of practices for a pilot.

Who is it for?

Australian draftspersons and building designers working on residential projects, and the consultants they work with: structural engineers, energy raters, land and building surveyors, soil testers and town planners.

What does “split payments” mean?

The homeowner pays one payment per stage, and that payment is divided between the designer and each consultant on the stage. Each party is planned to be paid their share directly by a regulated payments provider, with a tax invoice in their own name.

Does it replace my accounting software?

No. It is planned to handle proposals, stage invoices and payments, and to sync with your accounting software. Xero is the first planned integration.

Money and GST

Will the software hold my client’s money?

No. The plan is that funds are processed and paid out by an established, regulated payments provider. The software itself is not planned to hold client money or operate a trust account.

How is GST handled when consultant fees are included?

It depends on who is supplying each service. The planned default treats each consultant as supplying the client directly, with a tax invoice in the consultant’s name. Practices that include consultants in their own fee can invoice the whole amount instead. This is general information, not tax advice; check your arrangement with your accountant.

What if a consultant is not registered for GST?

We plan to support consultants who are not registered for GST, so the invoice for their share shows no GST.

Can I charge a handling fee on consultant fees?

Some client agreements allow the designer to add a handling fee when they arrange or pay consultants. We plan to support an optional handling fee that is shown clearly to the client. Whether you can charge one depends on your agreement.

Does this deal with security of payment laws?

No. It is not planned to prepare or serve payment claims under security of payment laws. Whether those laws apply depends on the contract and your state, and jobs for owner-occupiers are often treated differently. Get advice for your situation.

How much will it cost?

Provisional early-access prices are A$59 a month for Solo, A$129 for Studio and A$249 for Practice, all including GST. Consultants are planned to be free. Prices may change before launch, and pilot practices get three months free.

What will payments cost?

Indicative fees are 0.75% + A$0.30 (capped at A$60) for PayTo or direct debit, and 2.2% + A$0.30 for card. These are estimates; the final fees, including how GST applies to them, will be confirmed before launch.

The pilot

What does the pilot involve?

Running one or two real residential projects through it, with at least one consultant, and giving regular feedback. Pilot practices get three months free, then a founding price on the Studio plan.

What happens to the details I put on the waitlist?

Help shape it before launch

We are looking for a small group of Australian design practices and consultants to pilot this on one or two real projects.
